The Spa Road development in Gloucester brought several challenges, largely due to the very small, tight site coupled with the restrictions of being in a conservation area. Surrounded by traditional buildings, the Council and Conservation Officer supported Apex in their plan to build a contemporary building which would aid the regeneration of the area.
The building itself utilises a timber frame construction, unusual on a building of this height. This is a far lighter material and therefore made it far easier to move the material within such a tight space, making construction much faster. The curved roof, smoked glass and timber boarding gives the building its distinctive, contemporary feel – a truly 21st century design which enhances the 19th and 20th century buildings around it.
