A sympathetic extension to an old Victorian school was required by Steam Mills Primary School in Cinderford. The existing building forms an ‘H’ shape and therefore has two courtyard areas. The new extension takes one of these courtyards and converts it to form a new library and classrooms. It also creates a new entrance for the school at the rear of the property, away from the busy road. This solution is not only safer for the children, but also alleviates congestion on the main road, facilitating traffic flow.

The extension takes its design inspiration from the existing Victorian style whilst adding a modern twist. The use of stone in the plinth walls matches the new in with the old, yet the timber boarding and extensive use of glazing adds a more contemporary feel.
